The Providence Preservation Society(PPS) with the Arts and Business Council of RI( A&BC/RI) presents a unique exhibit which present preservation advocacy through fine art. The show features the work of ten professional photographers and will open with a Gallery Night Providence reception on Thursday, September 18, 6:00–9:00 p.m at Butterfield. A closing reception will be held on Saturday, October 18, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Refreshments for both of these receptions will be provided by the North End Café of North Providence. Since it was first shown in 1994, the exhibit has earned a reputation as a showcase of striking photography from some of the most talented professional photographers in the state of Rhode Island. This year’s participating artists are Kristin Carlson, Michael Cevoli, Stephanie Ewens, Kryzstyna Harber-Caldarone, Adam Hall, Scott Lapham, Brian McDonald, Frank Mullin and David Simione. Each endangered property represents its own unique characteristics and particular challenges. The photographers are given free rein to artistically interpret the sites as they wish. The work produced captures the distinctive character of each property, the richness of these historic resources and the threats surrounding them. Using both black and white and color prints, and a variety of photographic formats, the photographers discover the unique details of the buildings–highlighting architectural features and portraying the buildings in their overall context.
All work is available for purchase. Exhibit runs through October 18th.
Exhibit gallery hours are: Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00- 5:00 p.m.
Call for Artists, Poets and Writers Context, a digital media installation curated by artist/composer Tim O'Keefe
The Arts & Business Council of RI and Indie Arts RI are sponsoring an ongoing digital poetry, prose and art installation, curated by artist/composer Tim O’Keefe, that will be displayed on donated cell phones. The concept utilizes a common means of communication (the cell phone) and liberates it as an artful, interactive tool that individuals can use to create, interact, express and connect. Submissions of poetry and writing must be no longer than 160 characters in length including letters, numbers, symbols and spacing. The 160 character guideline is based on the capacity allowed for modern text messaging, and transforms text messages into an artistic medium. The challenge to the writer or artist is to stick within these guidelines. ASCII art will also be accepted and does not need to conform to the above guidelines. Submissions accepted will be seen on cell phones mounted in a public exhibition space in Downtown Providence in July 2008 and possibly other spaces within Rhode Island through 2009.
Submission, contact information and bio are due July 1 by e-mail to : indieartsri@artsandbusinessri.org
Please put the word "Con- text" in the subject line.
