The Encore Award
A&BC/RI’s most prestigious award, was presented to Merrill W. Sherman, President and CEO of Bancorp Rhode Island, and it’s wholly-owned subsidiary Bank Rhode Island- a community bank with a commercial lending focus. The award is presented in recognition of an individual or corporations inspirational leadership in support of various arts and cultural initiatives. Under Sherman’s leadership, Bank Rhode Island’s total deposits have grown by more than 65% since its formation in 1996, and it is currently the fourth largest bank in the Providence metropolitan area. The Bank’s extensive business services include international banking, cash management services, client escrow services, a variety of business checking, accounts, a complete array of personal banking products and online banking.

The A&BC/RI Jabez Gorham Award
which recognizes an outstanding arts/cultural organization for an unwavering commitment to excellence, community impact and success in organizational development was presented to The Island Moving Company. The company was founded in 1982, and under the artistic direction of Miki Ohlsen, has commissioned over 50 new works in the past decade and received five Meet the Composer grants for new music. The Company has collaborated with poets, visual artists, filmmakers and musicians. In 2001, with the support of the RI Foundation, the Company hosted a national choreographers competition, bringing in choreographers from across the United States. The Company also conducts creative movement workshops every year for the Middletown school system and at the Moses Brown School.

The A&BC/RI Small Business Award
recognizes a business with fewer than 100 employees that has provided outstanding support to the arts in Rhode Island. This year’s award was presented to Robert L. Newbert, CEO Duffy & Shanley, Inc. Duffy and Shanley have supported the arts in RI for nearly 20 years through pro bono projects for the Trinity Repertory Company, the RI Philharmonic Orchestra, RI’s ballet theatre, Providence Black Repertory Company, and many others. The company has also initiated collaboration with the Rhode Island School of Design, whereby RISD students could exhibit their work at the agency on a rotating basis. The gallery, which is called “Kindling”, is intended to showcase local artists and inspire creative thinking for all.

The 2003 A&BC/RI Individual Achievement Award
was presented to choreographer, Deb Meunier. Deb Meunier is the artistic director and primary choreographer for Fusionworks Dance Company. Her choreography has been produced across the United States, and she was recently invited to present her choreography at the prestigious 92nd Street Y in New York City. Ms. Meunier is a past recipient of the Lonsdale Feinstein Community Citizen Award. The A&BC/RI Individual Achievement Award recognizes the exemplary achievement of individual artists that have helped to improve the quality of life for Rhode Islanders.

The 2003 A&BC/RI Arts Advocate Award
recognizes the commitment and leadership of an individual who has enhanced the opportunities for Rhode Island artists and arts organizations. This year’s award was presented to Dr. Joseph A. Chazan. Dr. Chazan is an active supporter of the arts and especially of individual artists. He was a past Chairman of the RI State Council of the Arts and is presently a member of the Board of Directors of RISD, and sits on both the Fine Arts committee and the Museum Committee.

The 2003 A&BC/RI Volunteer of the Year Award
was presented to psychotherapist Anita H. Berger. From 1998 to 2000 Ms. Berger was placed as a consultant to the RI Historical Society, Warrior Women, the Fusion Works Dance Company, and Waterspill Junction. Ms. Berger presently uses her services to assist the Island Moving Company. This award recognizes the personal accomplishments of an individual volunteer working in the BVA program.

The 2003 A&BC/RI Special Recognition Award
will be presented to Deming E. Sherman of the firm Edwards & Angell, LLP. Mr. Sherman has provided inspirational leadership for the arts in Rhode Island and currently serves on the boards of the RI Philharmonic Orchestra, Providence Preservation Society and Festival Ballet Providence. In addition to Mr. Sherman’s numerous board appointments, he has generously provided his legal expertise to many projects in the community, most recently supporting a coalition of artists, preservationists and community leaders in their efforts to improve the proposed development at Eagle Squares.
